May 2021: Change Your Stars

Our May theme is: CHANGE YOUR STARS! We all love those characters who see their fate and refuse to accept it. Who forge their own path through life, no matter how hard. Who never give up the pursuit of their goals and dreams.

Our book this month is an epic fantasy set in an Indian-inspired world. A princess, held captive in an abandoned, ancient temple plots revenge on the brother who banished her there. When the princess witnesses the hidden powers of one of the maids sent to clean the temple, she forces her into an uneasy alliance in order to escape and overthrow her brother. Together, they will set an empire ablaze. We loved the gorgeous prose and the dynamics between our two morally grey main characters!

Our Illumicrate edition will have exclusive stencilled edges and embossing on the hardback and come with a signed bookplate! Both the full box and book only option also come with the matching pin designed by Stacey McEvoy-Caunt

Our items this month are inspired by Girls of Paper and Fire, Spinning Silver, Skyward, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and City of Brass! This month we’ll be including one of our @pauhami booksleeves in the box!

The book at a glance:

  •  Adult fantasy, first book in a series
  • Stencilled edges, embossing on the hardback, signed bookplate
  •  Indian-inspired characters & setting written by Indian author, F/F relationship between main characters

Content warnings from the author’s website:

  • Explicit violence including immolation and self-immolation
  • Gender-based violence (this does not include sexual assault)
  • Homophobia and internalised homophobia
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Self-mutilation
  • Abusive family dynamics
  • Child murder
  • Body horror (plant-based, cosmic)
  • Forced drug use and depictions of addiction/withdrawal

2021 Past Items Sale – updated

The date for our past boxes and books sale is Tuesday 23rd March. To help with the level of traffic to our site, we will be doing staggered releases following the schedule listed below, as well as implementing a queue system. More details are below. Orders are scheduled to ship in mid-April

Please be aware of the following:

  • Everything that will be in the sale is on this list. If you don’t see it on the list, it wont be in the sale.
  • We cannot offer combined shipping on any orders, apologies for any inconvenience caused by this.
  • We have very limited quantities of the majority of products, and everything will be limited to one per customer.
  • Adding a product to your basket does NOT reserve it. The product could still sell out whilst you are checking out. We appreciate that this is frustrating, but it is how our site is set up. Please keep this and the limited quantities available in mind before  attempting to order and please do not get annoyed with any of our team if you miss out as a result.
  • Our system does, occasionally, oversell a product if multiple orders go through the system simultaneously when stock is low. There is very little we can do to prevent this when we already have such small quantities of most things, but we will be holding back some of everything to try and prevent us needing to cancel and refund orders. Please be aware that there is a possibility we will need to do this, and in the event that we do we will be cancelling the last orders made.
  • The prices below are without shipping and VAT.
  • As we are selling the last of our stock in most cases, we are unlikely to be able to offer replacements.
  • Where stock is very low, quantities available are given in brackets.

We will be implementing a queue system for our past items sale. We gave people the option to vote between the queue and the lottery, the 2 systems we feel will be the fairest and give us the best chance of the sale running smoothly, and the queue was the winner of the vote.

Please remember that most of our products are *incredibly* limited and very sought after. No matter what system we implement, many of you would miss out. We cannot create more products, so all we can do is ensure our sale runs as smoothly as possible.

Here is how every staggered drop will work:

  • A waiting room will be set up 5 minutes before each release. The link will be placed in our Linktree each time and will lead directly to the shop section of our site (where the products will be listed), however going to any page on our site from any location will automatically put you in the waiting room or queue if one is in effect.
  • Once you are in the waiting room, you will automatically be moved into the queue once it opens at a random position. If you join the queue at a later time, you will be moved to the back of the queue.
  • Once the items in that drop are sold out *the queue will be removed*. It will then get re-set for each subsequent drop. You will need to enter each separate queue for each separate sale time, if you are looking to purchase items in separate drops. You will not be able to remain in a previous queue. We will be updating both our instagram stories and twitter when items in a drop have sold out and the queue has been removed, so you will need to make sure you are checking one of these.

A few notes:

  • The waiting room and queue do have a limit as to how many people can be in them. If that limit is reached, you will get a message that it is currently full. If you remain on the page you will be placed in the waiting room/queue once space opens up.
  • You can purchase items in the same drop at the same time. You are limited to one of each type of item, but not limited on how many can be on one order. Please do remember there will be multiple people trying to order at once, and it may be better for you to prioritise what you want most to give you the best chance of getting that item.
  • Once you are through to the site, you will be able to remain on the site until the next waiting room starts. At that point, any refreshes, moves to other pages etc will put you in that waiting room.
  • You are able to refresh the queue without losing your position if you are having an issue with the queue not updating. If you close the browser window you will lose your place in the queue.

April 2021: Dearly Departed

Our April theme is Dearly Departed! This month is dedicated to those with an affinity for death be that a necromancer, assassin, zombie hunter or vampire.

Our featured book this month is a YA standalone fantasy. A blood mage, who has stayed hidden from the royal family that binds her kind to spirit guardians, accidentally reveals her powers and is thrust into the life she had managed to avoid. Desperate to escape, but not knowing who to trust and with danger lurking round every corner, she forms a reluctant alliance with her spirit guardian to save them both from an unwanted fate. We loved the spirit of the main character, and her chemistry with her love interests (that’s right, there’s 2!). Our Illumicrate edition features exclusive stencilled edges and character art endpapers designed by @lilith_saur and will come with a signed bookplate & author letter. It’s a truly stunning edition! Both our full box and book only options come with the matching pin designed by @stacey.mcevoy.caunt

Items this month are inspired by Gideon the Ninth, Nevernight, The Beautiful, Dread Nation and more! This is one of our favourite boxes this year, and we can’t wait for you to see it!

The book at a glance:

  • Death (lots, major and minor characters)
  • Death of queer characters, but most main characters are queer
  • Parent death, on page and off
  • Violence
  • Blood
  • Gore
  • Mild body horror

  • Threat of rape/abuse of the main character

March 2021: Fighting Spirit

Our March theme is FIGHTING SPIRIT!

Our chosen book this month follows a soldier and a princess both with divided loyalties. Should the soldier be loyal to the homeland she barely remembers, or the nation she was conscripted to fight for? Will the princess choose her desire to claim her rightful throne, or the opportunity to aid a colonised land? There are many battles to fight and with their budding feelings for each other complicating matters, which path will they both take?

If you like yearning, scheming and #WomenWithWeapons then this North African-inspired debut is absolutely the book for you. Our Illumicrate Edition comes with exclusive sprayed edges, an exclusive hidden cover and is signed by the author! Both the book only & full box option also come with a matching pin designed by Stacey McEvoy-Caunt!

Our featured fandoms for March are The Court of Miracles, Kingdom of the Wicked, Winternight, The Bone Witch and an officially licensed The Dark Artifices item! This is also a @rosiethorns88 mug month! Our items this month are all beautiful and useable, we can’t wait to bring you some reveals.

February 2021: The City is Ours

Our February theme is THE CITY IS OURS! This month we’re inspired by stories that take place in cities we love or dream to visit, either real or imaginary!

Our featured book is a YA urban fantasy debut with an ensemble cast of teenagers from a magical underworld working together to stop a killer. For every murder that takes place in the human world, the fae realm is at greater risk of being discovered. Can they figure out the truth in time? This book absolutely perfect for you if you’re a fan of The Cruel Prince & Shadowhunters! We love this cast of characters, the interesting world & mythology the author created and of course, the snarky banter! Our Illumicrate edition comes with exclusive sprayed edges and is signed by the author! Plus, both our full box and book only options come with a matching pin designed by Stacey McEvoy-Caunt!

Our chosen fandoms this month are Crescent City, The Falconer, Cemetery Boys, The City We Became and Gilded Wolves! We love this mix of items: some that are perfect for when you’re out and about, and some that are gorgeous & useable! We can’t wait to bring you some reveals!

About Illumicrate and Cureadosity

Illumicrate is the original UK book box subscription. Founded in 2015 as a quarterly subscription, today, Illumicrate has a monthly book box subscription, a monthly book only subscription, and offers special edition boxes, exclusive editions of books, and more, in our shop. We don’t limit ourselves to YA and feature all genres.

The books we feature and sell are unique to us. We work closely with publishers on creating exclusive editions specifically for our monthly boxes. We are also the pioneers of aligning special edition boxes with highly anticipated releases, with The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo being the first of these in 2017.

Cureadosity is the uncomplicated picture book subscription box for 2-6 year olds. We aim to bring your little ones a diverse range of stories and make reading time a fun and enjoyable experience for all. Customers can choose from monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly boxes to suit your family’s needs.

We were born of the need for picture book recommendations, but it was tough to find any outside the big-name authors and popular book series. It was then we realised we wanted to create Cureadosity – a no fuss way for parents and carers to receive books to enjoy with their kids!

As a whole business and team, our core values are quality and inclusivity. Our book choices reflect the world we live in and our customer base; we support marginalised authors (LGBTQ+ and BAME) where possible, and strive to feature UK-based authors as much as possible. We know our customers appreciate our diverse choices.

We are interested in hiring someone who has a genuine passion for books and who aligns with our brand, values and book choices.

Shipping updates

While many of the issues we saw with having products made and shipped at the beginning of the pandemic have now stopped, there are still significant delays happening. Reduction in staff to allow for distancing in the workplace has increased production times to some items, and the reduction in commercial flights means delays shipping items. This has in turn increased the amount of goods shipping via sea, which means we are seeing some delays as our products don’t make it onto ships that are already full. Delays at port, exacerbated by reductions in staff to allow for COVID distancing, means these delays are worse than usual.

Book printers in the UK are also experiencing delays, both due to a reduction in staff and because many books that were scheduled to be published earlier in the year were pushed to the autumn, meaning they have more titles to print now. We are seeing delays in receiving books as a result of this.

We are doing everything we can to minimise these delays and build buffer periods into our planning so that delays affect boxes shipping on time as little as possible. That said, we are operating during a pandemic and there is only so much we can do to stop delays. We are so grateful for your continued patience during this difficult time.

We also want to assure you that the fulfilment centre who pack our boxes are taking every precaution to ensure this is done safely both for their employees and our customers. Our packers are spread the required distance apart, are wearing gloves to pack, and have extra sanitising products available. Our shipping company are also taking every precaution with handling boxes.

Here are a few general things to note

  • Our shipping company has reported that their courier partners are able to deliver in almost all countries they ship to. We are seeing delays in shipments both due to the lack of cargo planes and additional border checks, so please do be patient once you receive your tracking email. If there are no tracking updates after a week, or you have any concerns regarding the shipping of your order, please get in touch with us by email
  • We are able to change the delivery address of your order if needed. The last point this can be done is when the ‘Check Your Address’ emails go out to customers approximately 10 working days before orders ship.  These emails need replying to within 24 hours if you need to change the address, and after that point additional address changes are not possible. You do not need to reply if your address is correct. You can change your address for an existing order any time up to this point by emailing us to request it. Please note that changing your address in your account does not change it on any paid-for orders, including subscription renewals.

Information updated on Thursday 8th April

General updates

Brexit has exacerbated existing congestion at UK ports, causing considerable delays. As a result for at least the next few months we will begin shipping our monthly boxes & book only orders during the final week of the month

Due to a UK-wide cardboard shortage our orders will be shipping in plain boxes for the next couple of months. As a result of supply line issues, we’re unable to get more of our yellow book bags for the foreseeable future, and all book orders will instead ship inside clear acetate bags.

Rule of Wolves

We’re expecting this to begin shipping towards the end of the week beginning 5th April.

Update 25.03: Unfortunately due to delays at the printer, we’ll be receiving our book shipment a little later than planned, however we’re still hoping to get these out to customers by the end of the week beginning 5th April

Update 08.04: Orders will begin shipping tomorrow! International orders ship in batches and you will receive tracking when yours ships. If you are in the EU, we are still seeing delays as a result of Brexit. The length of the delays is definitely getting shorter, but please bear in mind that there most likely wont be a tracking update until your order has passed through customs, and please allow extra time for this to happen. International orders will ship in batches and you will receive tracking when your order ships. If you’re in the EU, we are still seeing delays as a result of Brexit. The delay is definitely getting smaller, but please bear in mind that there most likely wont be a tracking update until your order has passed through customs, and please allow extra time for this to happen.

Orders placed on or before 10th March will ship with the March boxes. Orders placed after this date will ship with the April boxes.

Update 16.03: These will be shipping with our March boxes & book only orders and we’re expecting these to begin shipping either at the end of next week or early the week after.

Update 25.03: These will begin shipping tomorrow! Reminder that, due to supply issues, these will be shipping in plain boxes with the books in acetate bags.

A Court of Silver Flames mini box

We expect to begin shipping these around mid-March

Update 04.03: The dust jackets will be arriving on 9 March and our fulfilment centre will begin packing these boxes as soon as the Chain of Iron and Red Tigress orders have finished packing. We expect these to start shipping 15-16th March.

Update 08.03: While the printer confirmed last Thursday that the dust jackets would arrive this Tuesday, unfortunately we’ve been informed today of a last minute delay, and we will now not be getting them until the end of this week. Orders will now start shipping towards the end of next week.

Update 16.03: Our fulfilment centre began packing these boxes at the end of last week, and they will begin shipping on Friday!

We expect these to begin shipping either the end of the first week of March, or early the following week

Update 04.03: Our fulfilment centre are now packing these orders, and we’re expecting them to begin shipping early next week.

Update 08.03: These orders began shipping today! UK tracking will go out in the next day or so. International orders will ship in batches and you will receive tracking when your order ships. If you’re in the EU, we are still seeing delays as a result of Brexit. Things will hopefully be a bit quicker than last month, but please bear in mind that there most likely wont be a tracking update until your order has passed through customs, and please allow extra time for this to happen. Some orders will be shipping in clear acetate bags instead of our usual yellow book bags. Due to supply issues with the fabric used for them, we’re still waiting for our most recent order to finish production. The acetate bags will be used for the next few months instead.

February ‘The City is Ours’ boxes and book only

Due to Brexit exacerbating existing port delays, these will begin shipping at the end of February

Update 08.02: The bad weather in the UK currently means the port our final item should be coming into is currently closed. This unfortunately is going to delay our February boxes. We should have more news early next week.

Update 19.02: The ship our final item is on has finally landed after a month-long delay, and the item will be delivered to us early next week. Our fulfilment centre have begun packing the book only orders in advance, and we’re hoping the full boxes will begin shipping at the end of next week, but it may be the beginning of the week after.

Update 23.02: Our final item has arrived, and our fulfilment centre are now packing the boxes. We’re hoping they will begin shipping at the end of this week, but it may still be the beginning of next. We will have an update in a few days.

Update 24.02: Our February boxes & book only orders will begin shipping on Monday! UK tracking will be sent early next week. International boxes will ship in batches and you will receive tracking when yours ships. We expect all orders to have shipped by the end of next week. If you’re in the EU, we are still seeing delays as a result of Brexit. Things will hopefully be a bit quicker than last month, but please bear in mind that there most likely wont be a tracking update until your order has passed through customs, and please allow extra time for this to happen.

The Mask Falling

These will be shipping in early February

Update 08.02: These began shipping on Friday. International orders always ship in batches and you will receive tracking when your order ships. All orders should be shipped by the middle of this week, don’t forget to check your spam folder for your email. We are seeing delays clearing boxes through customs as a result of Brexit. The delays are approximately a week. Once your parcel ships the tracking will likely not update again until it has cleared through customs, this is normal.

Update 15.02: Our parcels to Ireland are still held up. This has been caused by our shipping company needing to change the courier used, and the resulting backlog from this. Further delays have been caused by the bad weather. Parcels for Ireland should see tracking updates this week.

With love,

The Illumicrate Team

January 2021: Rebellious Royals

Who’s ready for our first theme of 2021?! It is: REBELLIOUS ROYALS! Our January theme is dedicated to those royals who don’t like to follow established conventions or play by the rules.

Our chosen book for January is a debut space opera. With an intergalactic treaty at risk following the death of an imperial prince, his widower is rushed into an arranged marriage with a disreputable prince to try and save negotiations. But was the prince’s death truly an accident? And are the new couple now developing feelings for each other? Part murder mystery, part political intrigue, our favourite element of this novel was the swoon-worthy central romance that is one of the sweetest we have ever read! Our edition comes with exclusive sprayed edges, is signed by the author, and both our full box and book only options come with a matching pin designed by Stacey McEvoy-Caunt!

Our featured fandoms this month are ACOTAR, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, You Should See Me in a Crown, Mirage, AND we’ll be including an officially licensed Cruel Prince item! We adore this mix of items, they have a distinct cosy winter vibe and are all perfect for dark evenings spent snuggled up at home. Reveals to come!

December 2020: A Legacy to Protect

Our December theme is A LEGACY TO PROTECT! It’s the end of the year, and it’s been a rough one, so we thought we’d give you all a little treat and bring you a TWO BOOK MONTH!

That’s right, both box and book only subscribers will be getting two books this month. You deserve it.

Our main book is a YA hardback about a  sorority house of witches, the girls who are members, and the secrets they hold and discover. Our Illumicrate edition comes with exclusive sprayed edges and signed bookplates, plus a pin inspired by the book and designed by Stacey McEvoy Caunt!

Our second book is a YA paperback mystery about a group of heirs summoned to the mysterious island home of the grandmother they’ve never met. She disinherited their parents but is she ready to make amends, or is something more sinister going on? Our edition comes with sprayed edges and a signed bookplate!

There’s mysteries to unlock in both our chosen books this month and we were absolutely gripped! The whole Illumicrew raced through these selections.

Our featured fandoms are City of Brass, Red White and Royal Blue, Jade City, The Poppy War and Avatar: The Last Airbender! And it’s December which means it’s a @rosiethorns88 mug month!

We’ve brought you a totally kickass box to end the year on and we hope you’re as excited about it as we are! We are aiming to get these boxes out earlier than usual so they’ll hopefully reach as many of you as possible pre-Christmas, but please be aware we cannot guarantee this.

We’re also giving you a little sneak peek at our 2021 book choices through our favourite medium: EMOJI HINTS!

November 2020: Spellbinding Stories

Our theme for November is SPELLBINDING STORIES! These are books whose lyrical prose or enchanting plots have truly bewitched us. We’ll be including an officially licensed Strange the Dreamer item and items inspired by Circe, This Is How You Lose the Time War, The Starless Sea and more! This is our 5 year anniversary box and we are so proud of it. We have some exciting reveals to bring you, but we’ll start with announcing our next Pauhami book sleeve is in this box! Our series with Pauhami will now be inspired by our favourite magical places, and we’ve certainly started this series off with a bang!

Our featured book this month is about three sisters who get involved with the suffragist movement and also begin discovering the lost ways of witchcraft. It’s a truly magical read and we’re so excited to be bringing you an Illumicrate edition with exclusive sprayed edges and signed by the author! Both our full box and book only options will come with an enamel pin inspired by our chosen book and designed by Stacey McEvoy-Caunt.
